Manas Adams

Born in 1993 in Long Beach, California, I began observing people in my dads car payment office, where customers passed through each month. I became fasinated by their gestures, rhythms, and unfiltered moments which shaped my early understanding of character.

I started photographing friends and family at twelve and film followed a decade later when I became interested in what happens before and after the image is taken.

My work centers on family, alienation, immigration, and Sudanese identity.

FILMED AND EDITED BY MANAS

Matab has kept her relationship with Love hidden from her Muslim Sudanese family for four years. When Love converts to Islam and the couple begins discussing marriage, secrecy is no longer possible. The film traces the complexities of faith, belonging, and cultural inheritance as a non-Sudanese partner enters the family for the first time.

I film my mother getting ready for a night out as she applies lip gloss in the mirror. Gold along her arms. Adornment as ritual and beauty as inheritance.
